ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES
B.Sc Dialysis Technology
History / Background
"National estimates say 1 in 10 Indians suffer from some degree of CKD. In India, 5%-7% of stage 5 CKD patients will require life-long dialysis. At present, of the 1.5 lakh new patients who suffer from end-stage renal failure annually, only 3,500 get kidney transplants and 6,000 undergo dialysis.
There are 54 million Diabetics in India and with every 3 rd patient with Diabetes at risk for Chronic Kidney Disease, the situation is only likely to get worse.
There are only 1470 Dialysis Units in the country and only 1000 Nephrologists. To manage the burden of Chronic Kidney Disease in the country, India needs another 40,000 Hemodialysis Units and not less than 20,000 Nephrologists.
To bridge the gap and manage the huge burden of Chronic Kidney DIsease, the American model of stand-alone Dialysis Centers and a plentiful supply of trained Dialysis Technologists are the key.
Description
In a healthy human body, kidneys are responsible for purifying the blood. When the kidneys fail, they are unable to carry out this purification process. This is when dialysis process comes handy! When natural purification of blood (by kidneys) stops, it becomes necessary to intervene and perform artificial purification using a Dialysis machine.
A dialysis technician is a person who has been trained to operate the hemodialysis machine and carry out pre, intra and post dialysis procedures. The tasks of a Dialysis Technician include:
- Setting up dialysis machine
- Preparing sterilization mix
- Recording vital body stats of the patient (temperature, blood pressure, age, pulse rate and weight)
- Monitoring the patient
- Guiding the patient and communicating with him/her
- Administering anaesthesia (as per requirement)
- Operate dialysis machine
- Supervise dialysis process
- Calculating blood flow
- Cleaning and inspection of dialysis machine
Scope / Opportunities
Dialysis technology graduates may find a job at hospitals (Government or private), clinics or healthcare setups offering dialysis treatment. Some of the fast growing stand-alone Dialysis Clinic Chains are NephroLife, NephroPlus, Sparsh and DaVita, These corporate chains offer plenty of job opportunities.
Usually Dialysis Technologists work in a team under the supervision of qualified Doctors and don titles like ‘Dialysis Supervisor’, ‘Dialysis Manager’ or ‘Dialysis Therapist’. Besides work in clinical settings, opportunities are also available with Dialysis Equipment manufactures like Fresenius Medical Care in technical & marketing teams.
