ABOUT THE COURSES
There are 750,000 doctors in India – that is 1 doctor for 1500 people, compared to 1 doctor for 600 people in China and 1 doctor for 400 people in the United States. The WHO recommended Doctor:Population ratio is 1: 1000. To bridge the gap, India needs to add another 600,000 doctors in the next 10 years. As this gap is unlikely to be bridged in the anticipated time-frame, Physician Assistants are likely to play a major role in filling the crucial void in India’s health care needs.
History / Background:
About four decades ago in the United States, physicians and educators recognized there was a shortage and uneven distribution of primary care physicians. To expand the delivery of quality medical care, Dr.Eugene Stead of the Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina started the first Physician Assistant (PA) programme in the year 1960.He selected Navy corpsmen who received considerable medical training during their military service and during the war in Vietnam. He based the curriculum of the PA programme on his knowledge of the fast-track training of doctors during World War II. Today, forty-eight states in the US allow PAs to write and sign prescriptions without a physician's signature.
In India, the Physician Assistant program was started by Dr. K. M Cherian, the renowned Cardiac Surgeon in 1992 at the Madras Medical Mission in Chennai. Ever since, the Physician Assistant program has grown in scope and recognition. Today, most major Health Universities in India offer the Physician Assistant program as a 4 year course.
